Ford has introduced a five-tonne Transit

Offering an increased gross vehicle weight of 5.0 tonnes (11,023 lb) should enable the Ford Transit to appeal to an even broader range of operators. Both panel van and chassis cab variants are going to be available when deliveries begin next month.

The panel van, which only comes in L4 Jumbo guise, has a load length of 4,217 mm (166.0”). Maximum payload is 2,383 kg (5,253 lb), and the body sides have been reinforced to help cope with that extra potential.

Customers opting for the chassis cab will be faced with much more choice. They can pick from a selection of three wheelbases, four frame lengths, and either single or double cabs. Clearly cargo capacity is dependant on the type of body but, as an indication, the factory-fitted flat-bed is capable of carrying up to 2,558 kg (5,639 lb).

The 5.0-tonne Transit is powered by a Heavy Duty Truck 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel engine that sends 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 390 Nm (287 lb-ft) of peak torque to an uprated 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) rear axle. If the standard six-speed manual gearbox isn’t deemed suitable, then the alternative is a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Upgraded hubs, wheels and rear brakes are also part of the improved specification.
