Ford unveils the pure-electric E-Transit

Electric delivery vehicles are destined to become much more common, thanks mainly to an increasing number of low emissions zones and the possibility of combustion-engine bans in some city centres. Ford’s response is the E-Transit, which will be offered in panel van, double-cab-in-van and chassis cab guises across Europe.

The E-Transit features a single electric motor that sends 265 bhp (198 kW / 269 PS) plus 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque to the rear axle.

However, for many prospective customers, range is likely to be just as important as output. They shouldn’t be too concerned, because a large 67 kWh battery pack is fitted beneath the floor. The result is an estimated WLTP Combined driving range of 217 miles (350 kilometres).

If energy levels are running low, then topping up from 15 to 80 percent capacity takes about half an hour via a 115 kW DC facility. Alternatively, the on-board 11.3 kW AC charger is able to fully replenish a flat battery in just over eight hours.

The E-Transit has the same cargo volume as a regular diesel-powered rear-wheel drive Transit. Anticipated maximum payload is 1,616 kg (3,562 lb) for the panel van, while the equivalent figure for the chassis cab version is 1,967 kg (4,336 lb).

Ford is going to manufacture the E-Transit in both Turkey and the United States. Fleet trials with European operators are scheduled to take place next year, ahead of full market launches in spring 2022.

Alfa MiTo TwinAir arrives

The Alfa Romeo MiTo supermini is now available with the innovative two-cylinder TwinAir petrol engine. Although its capacity is only 875 cc, a turbocharger and the MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve control system mean it produces a respectable 83 bhp (62 kW / 85 PS) and 145 Nm (103 lb/ft) of torque. Performance might not be scintillating - the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 12.5 seconds and maximum speed is 108 mph (173 km/h) - but the TwinAir’s trump card is efficiency. Carbon dioxide emissions are only 98 g/km, a level that brings numerous benefits for UK drivers including zero road tax, a full discount on the London Congestion Charge and qualification for the lowest company car benefit-in-kind rate. Fuel economy is also decent and, according to the official figures, a TwinAir-powered MiTo will manage 67.3 mpg (4.2 l/100km) on the combined cycle. Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.

Aston Martin Vantage GTE

Aston Martin Racing has announced that it’ll be entering a V8 Vantage in the GTE Pro category of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship. Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE.
