2021 Volkswagen Golf R vs. its rivals
Volkswagen dealers in the UK are now accepting orders for the R version of the eighth-generation Golf.
The newcomer has three obvious rivals which also feature a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and all-wheel drive. They are the Audi S3 Sportback, BMW M135i xDrive and Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic Hatchback.
Interestingly, none of them can be specified with a manual gearbox. The Audi, Mercedes-AMG and Volkswagen are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the BMW has a traditional eight-speed torque-converter automatic.
