2021 European Car of the Year winner named

A jury comprising 59 motoring journalists from 22 European countries has decided the winner of the 2021 European Car of the Year contest.

Given current trends, it’s perhaps surprising that neither an SUV nor a pure-electric model took the title. Rather, the attractive and accomplished Toyota Yaris five-door supermini was victorious.

Each delegate had a total of 25 points to allocate across the seven contenders (with a limit of 10 per each finalist). Here’s how the rankings, points scores and points shares ended up:
  1. Toyota Yaris – 266 (18.0%)
  2. Fiat New 500 – 240 (16.3%)
  3. Cupra Formentor – 239 (16.2%)
  4. Volkswagen ID.3 – 224 (15.2%)
  5. Škoda Octavia – 199 (13.5%)
  6. Land Rover Defender – 164 (11.1%)
  7. Citröen C4 – 143 (9.7%)
