2023 Cadillac Lyriq specifications announced

Cadillac has unveiled the production version of the Lyriq, the brand’s first pure-electric SUV. This new addition to the range is built on GM’s Ultium rear-wheel drive modular platform.

Measuring 4,996 mm (196.7”) long, 1,977 mm (77.8”) wide and 1,623 mm (63.9”) tall, it’s only 46 mm (1.8”) shorter than the current mid-size Cadillac XT6. However, the Lyriq has a more dramatic stance, thanks to an overall height that’s lower by 152 mm (6.0”).

A rearwards-sloping roof, a shallow glasshouse and large wheels (20” standard or 22” optional) also contribute to the EV’s striking proportions. Despite the absence of a combustion engine, one of the most notable styling elements is the ‘black crystal’ front grille, which is flanked by ultra-slim LED headlights.

Less imaginative is the colour choice. There’s a pitiful selection of either Stellar Black Metallic or Satin Steel Metallic paintwork, while the interior scheme can be either Sky Cool Gray or Noir.

A single permanent-magnet electric motor provides an estimated 340 horsepower (roughly 255 kW) plus 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. Performance figures have yet to be released, but they may be somewhat blunted by the Lyriq’s shockingly high 2,545 kg (5,610 lb) kerb weight. By contrast, the heaviest all-wheel drive XT6 is 2,127 kg (4,690 lb).

Of course, achieving lightness is difficult when a 12-module lithium-ion battery pack has to be lugged around. At least an energy capacity of 100 kWh is anticipated to deliver an EPA driving range in excess of 300 miles (482 kilometres).

Interestingly, Cadillac has decided to express recharging times as distance added over a set period:
  • Domestic 120 V – 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) of range per hour of charge time
  • Domestic 240 V (11.5 kW AC) – 31 miles (50 kilometres) of range per hour of charge time
  • Domestic 240 V (with a dedicated 19.2 kW AC wallbox) – 52 miles (83 kilometres) of range per hour of charge time
  • Public DC Fast Charge – up to 76 miles (122 kilometres) of range in 10 minutes of charge time
  • Public DC Fast Charge – up to 195 miles (314 kilometres) of range in 30 minutes of charge time
‘Regen on Demand’ should be a particularly useful item of equipment. As well as letting drivers regulate the severity of the regenerative braking, the system also allows one-pedal operation.

Cadillac dealers will begin accepting Lyriq orders in September 2021, ahead of deliveries commencing during the first half of 2022.

United States prices are going to start at $59,990 (approximately £43,360 or €49,970, based on today’s exchange rates).
