The new 2022 Citroën C5 X will be a rare sight

After a four-year absence, Citroën is planning a return to the D segment in Europe. The new contender – which apparently “offers the elegance of a saloon, the versatility of an estate and the commanding presence of an SUV” – has been named C5 X.

In reality, it’s a five-door hatchback with increased ground clearance that measures 4,805 mm (189.1”) long, 1,865 mm (73.4”) wide and 1,485 mm (58.4”) high. A wheelbase of 2,785 mm (109.6”) benefits rear-seat legroom, while boot capacity is 545 litres.

Indeed, the emphasis is on spaciousness and comfort. To help achieve those aims, available features include three-mode Citroën Advanced Comfort Active suspension that incorporates Progressive Hydraulic Cushions to give a smooth ride.

Furthermore, Advanced Comfort seats have an extra layer of padding, and the front and rear windows use acoustic laminated glass to reduce cabin noise. The interior should have a light and airy ambience too, courtesy of a large opening glazed sunroof.

The dashboard is dominated by a central 12” high-definition infotainment touchscreen. Among the car’s other technologies are a full-colour head-up display and Highway Driver Assist. The latter provides Level 2 semi-autonomous capability by combining Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Keeping Assist.

Full powertrain details have yet to be released, but the line-up is set to be headed by a 225 PS (222 bhp / 165 kW) petrol plug-in hybrid.

UK sales of the made-in-China C5 X are due to begin towards the end of this year.

Is the large Citroën likely to be popular here? Of course not. Most prospective customers are bound to continue favouring models from German brands, because of their perceived image and attractive monthly PCP costs.
