Top 10: UK car sales Q1 2021
Against a background of difficult trading conditions, there has been a big change at the top of the UK’s new car registrations league table.
With 12,413 units delivered (a 2.9% market share), the Vauxhall Corsa became the country’s favourite model during the first three months of 2021. The Ford Fiesta (11,645 units / 2.7% share) consequently slipped down to second spot.
Unsurprisingly, crossovers and SUVs remained extremely popular. The Nissan Qashqai (10,739 units / 2.5% share) took third place, while the Volvo XC40, Kia Sportage, Ford Puma and Volkswagen Tiguan also appeared in the top ten.
Overall, the total sales figure of 425,525 represented a 12% volume drop versus the same period last year. However, it’s expected that much of the shortfall will be recovered during April as dealers begin to reopen.
Interestingly, traditional diesel and petrol powertrains both suffered as the trend towards electrification continued. In fact, the ‘Alternative’ category mix rose from 12.5% in Q1 2020 to 21.1% during Q1 2021.
