Top 10: UK car sales 2020 - winners and losers

Just 1,631,064 new cars were registered in the UK during 2020, a figure that was down by 680,076 units or 29.4% compared to 2019’s total. As in previous years, several manufacturers outperformed the market, but others experienced terrible results.

Apart from new entrants Cupra and Polestar, MG was the only marque to increase its year-on-year volume (thanks to a growing range of budget electric vehicles). Conversely, the likes of Porsche and Bentley demonstrated that some luxury brands were able to minimise the effects of an extremely challenging economic environment.

Interestingly, Asian and French firms dominated the losers’ league, with no truly ‘premium’ badges appearing on this table.
