Fourth-generation Škoda Fabia first view

Compared to its predecessor, the all-new 2022 Fabia is significantly larger. Overall length has increased by 111 mm (4.4”) to 4,108 mm (161.7”), while the car is 48 mm (1.9”) wider than before.

That growth follows a switch to the MQB-A0 modular platform, which already underpins the current Audi A1, Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza superminis.

One main beneficiary of the upsizing is interior space. In particular, there’s more room for rear-seat passengers, partly because the wheelbase has been stretched from 2,470 mm (97.2”) to 2,564 mm (100.9”). Boot capacity is up by 50 litres to a best-in-class 380 litres, too.

As well as being rather handsome, the 2022 Fabia boasts segment-leading aerodynamics. Various devices – including adjustable front intake shutters, smaller door mirror housings, extra under-body panels and a bigger tailgate spoiler – have helped to achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.28.

Unsurprisingly, Škoda has taken the opportunity to introduce numerous advanced technologies. For instance, a configurable 10.25” digital display is available as an alternative to a conventional analogue instrument cluster.

Depending on the infotainment system ordered, the dashboard’s central touchscreen will be 6.5”, 8.0” or 9.2”. The most sophisticated ‘Amundsen’ set-up incorporates satellite navigation, Wireless SmartLink / Android Auto / Apple CarPlay connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, gesture control and a digital voice assistant. In addition, telematics services are provided via Škoda Connect.

Several driver aids are appearing on a Fabia for the first time. Among them are Travel Assist (combines Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist), Park Assist (identifies suitable parallel and bay spaces, then takes over the steering if required) and Manoeuvre Assist (applies the brakes when an obstacle is detected during low-speed movements).

The engine selection comprises two MPI (multi-point injection) and three TSI (direct injection) petrol units. All comply with the latest Euro 6d emissions standards and, unusually, an optional 50-litre (11.0-gallon) fuel tank can be specified instead of the regular 40-litre (8.8-gallon) item.
