2022 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost unveiled

Black Badge models have been successful in attracting a different type of customer to Rolls-Royce. Often younger than might be expected, they want their cars to combine luxury with dynamics and performance. In fact, over a quarter of worldwide Rolls-Royce orders are now configured to Black Badge specification.

The latest member of the collection is the 2022 Black Badge Ghost, which is intended to take the concept to the next level.

As part of the upgrades, power from the twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine is increased by 29 PS (29 bhp / 21 kW) to 600 PS (591 bhp / 441 kW). Likewise, peak torque rises from 850 Nm (626 lb-ft) to 900 Nm (663 lb-ft).

That output is sent to all four wheels via a recalibrated eight-speed automatic transmission. Selecting ‘Low Mode’ speeds up the gear changes and alters the exhaust note. To cope with the Black Badge’s extra pace, larger air springs are fitted to better control body roll during cornering, plus braking feel has been improved.

Visually, this Ghost embodies “the dark side” of Rolls-Royce’s ‘Post Opulence’ minimalist design philosophy. Unique 21” alloy wheels with carbon fibre barrels can be complemented by a dark chrome finish on various components including the grille. Paintwork choice is effectively limitless.

Inside, the brightwork is darkened using a technique called physical vapour deposition. Hand-made cabin trim pieces are formed using multiple wood veneer layers, resin-coated carbon and metal-coated threads applied in a diamond pattern. Furthermore, the passenger side of the dashboard incorporates an illuminated fascia that uses LEDs to create a constellation of hundreds of twinkling stars.
