The Mercedes-Benz Sustaineer is a greener van

With the new Sustaineer concept van, Mercedes-Benz wants to demonstrate how current technologies could be used to minimise the impact that ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicles have on the environment.

The Sustaineer’s name is actually a portmanteau of Sustainability and Pioneer. Based on the pure-electric eSprinter, it gains roof-mounted low-profile solar panels which are claimed to provide several thousand kilometres of extra range per year.

To help improve ambient air quality, front and under-body filters capture fine dust from the atmosphere. Particles produced by the van are reduced too, thanks to low-rolling-resistance tyres and ceramic-coated cast iron brake discs.

Inside, heated seatbelts warm the cab’s occupants more efficiently. The load compartment features a straw-panel partition, as well as wooden components sourced from sustainably-managed forests. Continuing the theme of considered material choices, the underside panels are made from recycled polypropylene.

Even noise pollution has been addressed – a bespoke side delivery door system is quieter than the usual slam-shut sliding item.
