2023 Ford Ranger Raptor unveiled

Ford has announced that its new Ranger Raptor pick-up will be powered by a 3.0-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo petrol engine.

Developed by Ford Performance, the target output and torque figures for this V6 unit are 288 PS (284 bhp / 212 kW) and 491 Nm (262 lb-ft) respectively. Other key components include a ten-speed automatic transmission, an electronically-controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, a full-time four-wheel drive system, and locking differentials on both axles.

There’s also a selection of seven driving modes (three on-road and four off-road) which affect numerous response and control settings.

According to Ford, the powertrain “delivers effortless acceleration on gravel, dirt, mud and sand.” However, in the absence of any official data, gauging the actual pace of the latest Ranger Raptor isn’t really possible.

Tackling rough ground at high speeds can be punishing, so an upgraded long-travel suspension set-up is part of the specification, too.

Bespoke aluminium control arms are fitted, along with low-friction Fox 2.5” Live Valve internal bypass dampers. Furthermore, Fox Bottom-Out Control produces maximum force absorption as the those dampers reach their stroke limit, plus it provides an anti-squat function at the rear.

In addition, the chassis gains extra reinforcement, and thicker protection plates are attached to the underside. To ensure decent traction whatever the surface, 17” alloy wheels are shod with chunky all-terrain tyres.
