2014 Peugeot 108 revealed
The ability to personalise is almost mandatory in the city car segment nowadays. It’s certainly a theme that the all-new Peugeot 108 embraces.
A replacement for the 107, the 108 will be offered with either three or five doors and a choice of hatchback or convertible body styles (the latter, rather irritatingly, being called TOP! in capitals with an exclamation mark). Furthermore there are six trim grades, plus a host of customisation options that include two-tone paintwork, contrasting colours for the convertible’s powered fabric roof, body decals and replacement door mirror caps.
They certainly give the 108 a bit more visual pep, as otherwise its design is neat rather than striking. Perhaps the best aspect is at the rear, where a gently rising waistline meets the large light clusters and one-piece glazed tailgate.
The variety continues beneath the bonnet. There’s a selection of four petrol engines, three of which are 1.0 litre units while the other has a capacity of 1.2 litres. All have three cylinders and emit less than 100 g/km of carbon dioxide.
Every version comes with electric power steering, six airbags, emergency collision braking, hill start assist, indirect tyre under-inflation detection and a switchable electric stability program. Also available are keyless entry and starting, a reversing camera and an innovative smartphone connectivity device.
That last item is standard on Active models and above. Using either Mirror Link (compatible with Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone) or AppInCar (for Apple iOS), as well as Bluetooth and Mirror Screen, it basically replicates the phone’s display on the 108’s 7” touchscreen. As a result, the car’s infotainment system can control phone-based functions such as voice calls, satellite navigation and music streaming.
The Peugeot 108 makes its public debut at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show, ahead of a UK market launch in July. Prices have yet to be announced.
