2021 World Car Awards winners
93 motoring journalists from 28 countries have decided this year’s World Car Awards winners.
The jury members were asked to assess every contender based on eight criteria, namely Market Significance, Innovation, Emotional Appeal, Value, Occupant Environment, Safety, Performance, and Environment.
Here’s how they scored the top three finalists in each category:
World Car of the Year
1. Volkswagen ID.4 – 798
2. Honda e – 742
3. Toyota Yaris – 732
Victory went to the ID.4, which unsurprisingly attracted a lot of Environment votes. Volkswagen’s pure-electric SUV also did particularly well in terms of Market Significance and Innovation.
World Luxury Car
1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class – 853
2. Polestar 2 – 815
3. Land Rover Defender – 774
A convincing tally for the seventh-generation S-Class. Occupant Environment, Innovation and Safety were its strongest attributes.
World Performance Car
1. Porsche 911 Turbo – 822
2. Audi RS Q8 – 792
3. Toyota GR Yaris – 773
Arguably, the GR Yaris should have done better given the car’s capabilities and relative affordability. However, the 911 Turbo ended up earning the most support, with especially high ratings for Performance and Emotional Appeal.
World Urban Car
1. Honda e – 754
2. Toyota Yaris – 737
3. Honda Jazz / Fit – 719
Despite finishing top (thanks to good marks for Environment, Innovation and Emotional Appeal), the Honda e was actually deemed to be the worst of the three when considering Value.
World Car Design of the Year
1. Land Rover Defender – 299
2. Honda e – 239
3. Mazda MX-30 – 197
World Car Person of the Year
This prize went to Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation.
