Certain brands and models were clearly favoured by the jury of 93 motoring journalists from 28 countries. The Honda e and the Toyota Yaris / GR Yaris could both take three prizes apiece, for example.

Conversely, it wasn’t a great outcome for some other manufacturers. In particular, none of the five BMW vehicles that appeared on the finalist ‘long lists’ have advanced any further.

The contenders (in alphabetical order) are:

World Car of the Year
  • Honda e
  • Toyota Yaris
  • Volkswagen ID.4
World Luxury Car
  • Land Rover Defender
  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class
  • Polestar 2
World Performance Car
  • Audi RS Q8
  • Porsche 911 Turbo
  • Toyota GR Yaris
World Urban Car
  • Honda e
  • Honda Jazz / Fit
  • Toyota Yaris
World Car Design of the Year
  • Honda e
  • Land Rover Defender
  • Mazda MX-30
All of the winners are due to be announced on the 20th of April.
