2014 Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG announced

With a 5,980 cc, twin-turbo V12 engine, the new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG boasts some remarkable stats.

Power is 620 bhp (463 kW / 630 PS), an output that easily eclipses those of rivals such as the Aston Martin Rapide and Bentley Mulsanne. But perhaps most impressive is the peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb/ft), a figure which helps the long-wheelbase S-Class accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.3 seconds before going on to an electronically-restricted top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Efficiency isn’t too dreadful either, thanks partly to a start / stop device and an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission. The S 65 AMG achieves 23.7 mpg (11.9 l/100km) on the combined cycle, while carbon dioxide emissions are 279 g/km.

Such performance doesn’t come cheap, though. The price in Germany (including VAT at 19%) has been set at €232,050, an amount that should mean Mercedes-Benz charges around £165,000 in the UK.

At least the equipment levels are fairly generous. Fitted as standard are 20” forged alloy wheels, a head-up display, a touchpad control system for the infotainment functions, nappa leather upholstery and Dynamic Cornering Assist that eliminates understeer when making progress.

Also included in the specification is Magic Body Control adjustable suspension with Road Surface Scan, a camera-based set-up that looks ahead to spot surface undulations.

Sales of the S 65 AMG are due to begin in March 2014.
