Three-wheel Yamaha Tricity unveiled

With their extra stability and better ride comfort, trikes like the new Yamaha Tricity are going to have a particular appeal to anybody who feels nervous about riding a normal scooter.

The frontal ‘Leaning Multi Wheel’ arrangement that defines the Tricity is a complicated piece of engineering. At its core is a special parallelogram linkage which allows the Tricity to tilt into corners, plus the two front wheels each have an independent suspension set-up. What’s more they’re set close together, so filtering should still be possible in most situations.

To further help novice riders the seat height is just 780 mm (30.7”) and the Yamaha three-wheeler weighs a manageable 152 kg (335 lbs) fully-fuelled. An all-disc linked braking system will also inspire confidence on the road.

Power comes from a single-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled 125 cc engine producing 10.8 bhp (8.1 kW / 11.0 PS) with 10.4 Nm (7.7 lb/ft) of peak torque. That output is delivered to the rear wheel via a V-belt automatic transmission.

UK sales of the 2015 Tricity are expected to begin shortly, although Yamaha has yet to announce a price.
