2016 Volkswagen Transporter T6 first view

Although Volkswagen is calling the new Transporter a sixth-generation model, it does appear to be a reworked version of the current T5. That said, several of the changes are significant.

For instance, the arrival of the T6 also sees the introduction of some Euro-6 turbodiesel engines. While they all have a 2.0 litre capacity, their outputs are 83 bhp (62 kW / 84 PS), 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS), 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 201 bhp (150 kW / 204 PS). Alternatively, a 2.0 litre petrol unit in either 147 bhp or 201 bhp guises is going to be offered as well.

An engine stop-start system and Bluetooth are standard across the range, plus all but the most basic variants feature an automatic tailgate closing function.

The list of available equipment is both impressive and extensive. It includes a heated windscreen, satellite navigation, a radar-based frontal monitoring system, adaptive cruise control and dynamic damping with a choice of comfort, normal or sport settings.

One aspect that hasn’t altered much is the styling. Indeed, Volkswagen admits the design has been “modernised cautiously”. The most noticeable tweaks are at the front end, which now incorporates a more angular bonnet and a bolder grille arrangement.

Inside, the highlight is a subtly updated dashboard. It can be fitted with a 6.33” touchscreen that automatically switches between display and input modes using proximity sensors.

UK prices have yet to be confirmed, but in Germany the 2016 Transporter will cost from €23,035 (excluding VAT). That figure actually makes the entry-level T6 cheaper than its predecessor.

To mark the vehicle’s launch, Volkswagen has created the Generation Six. Based on the Multivan Comfortline, optional two-tone colour schemes and retro 18” Disc alloy wheels should make this special edition instantly recognisable. Front and rear parking sensors, Alcantara upholstery, heated seats, tinted windows and climate control are all part of the upgraded specification.
