Vauxhall introduces the Combo Cargo 4x4

In all likelihood, the new Vauxhall Combo Cargo 4x4 will probably be quite a rarity, because the number of customers needing a small van with four-wheel drive is small. Utility companies, civil engineering contractors and the emergency services are obvious prospective purchasers, but it could also form the basis for an interesting go-anywhere micro camper.

Although specially recalibrated suspension and steering components are fitted on the regular production line, the rest of the conversion work is actually done by French firm Dangel.

A rotary switch on the dashboard allows the driver to select either ‘Auto 4WD’ or ‘Eco 2WD’. As those names suggest, the former diverts torque to the rear wheels when those at the front start to lose grip, while the latter deactivates the 4x4 mechanism to save fuel. There’s an ‘R Lock’ mode too which locks the rear axle.

As standard, the modifications include engine and gearbox protection, plus the ride height is increased by 90 mm (3.5”). If extremely arduous conditions are anticipated, then specifying the optional 4x4 Plus Pack adds fuel tank and rear axle guards, and ground clearance is raised by a further 20 mm (0.8”) to 205 mm (8.1”). Also available at extra cost is a limited-slip rear differential.

Combo Cargo 4x4 starting prices (excluding VAT) are:
  • L1 Edition – £34,660
  • L2 Edition – £35,860
  • L1 Sportive – £36,010
It’s perhaps worth remembering that Vauxhall still offers the Construction Pack for the front-wheel drive Combo. Aimed at users who require just a modicum of rough-terrain ability, this consists of some under-body protection, a 30 mm (1.2”) lift and the advanced IntelliGrip traction control system with five settings (ESP on, ESP off, Snow, Mud, and Sand).
