Some updates for the 2021 Kia Rio
Kia has unveiled its revised Rio, which is due to arrive at dealers in Europe during the third quarter of this year. Changes to the B-segment hatchback focus mainly on various new technologies and a refreshed powertrain line-up, but there are a few subtle cosmetic tweaks as well.
On the outside, the 2021 model is recognisable by a slightly narrower grille, LED headlights and redesigned bumpers. The interior meanwhile gains better materials and a higher-resolution 4.2” digital display within the instrument cluster.
To coincide with the arrival of an improved infotainment system and ‘Phase II’ UVO Connect telematics, a larger 8.0” central touchscreen is now fitted. UVO Connect offers access to numerous in-car services such as live traffic information, nearby fuel prices and potential parking locations. Furthermore, a dedicated smartphone app can be used to remotely control several functions.
Kia has also enhanced the Advanced Driving Assistance Systems suite. Consequently, safety features available for the 2021 Rio include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist. In addition, Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist provide a degree of autonomy.
A major development is the introduction of an EcoDynamics+ mild-hybrid option. This combines a Smartstream 1.0 litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol engine – in either 98 bhp (74 kW / 100 PS) or 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS) guises – with a mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) and a small 48 volt lithium-ion polymer battery.
The MHSG, which is connected to the crankshaft via a belt, is able to switch instantly between two modes. In ‘motor’ it assists with acceleration, but ‘generator’ recuperates energy when slowing down.
Another EcoDynamics+ benefit is an intelligent manual transmission (iMT). Incorporating a fully-electronic ‘clutch-by-wire’, iMT works with the MHSG to allow automatic engine deactivation when coasting to save fuel.
If the Smartstream units don’t appeal, then the alternative is a naturally-aspirated 1.2 litre petrol motor that produces 82 bhp (61 kW / 84 PS).
Kia has yet to confirm performance data, efficiency figures or prices for the 2021 Rio.
