720S Le Mans marks a historic McLaren win

Twenty-five years ago today, a McLaren F1 GTR driven by JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya finished first in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. What’s more, other examples of McLaren’s remarkable car – which was competing in the GT1 class against faster prototypes – secured the third, fourth and fifth places. Heavy rain over that June weekend undoubtedly helped, but it was nevertheless a dominant display.

To commemorate the anniversary, McLaren has introduced the 720S Le Mans. Based on the existing coupĂ© model, this limited edition gains a gloss black roof scoop, carbon fibre louvred front fenders, gold-coloured brake calipers, and unique five-spoke wheels with ‘Le Mans’ etching.

Customers can opt for either Sarthe Grey or McLaren Orange paintwork. Both come with a contrasting Ueno Grey finish on the rear bumper, the lower-body sides and the central portion of the front bumper. Incidentally, that name recalls Ueno Clinic, the sponsor of 1995’s victorious F1 GTR.

The interior specification includes carbon fibre racing seats, black Alcantara upholstery and a choice of either Dove Grey or McLaren Orange accents. A ‘McLaren 25 anniversary Le Mans’ logo is embroidered on the head restraints, plus it also adorns a special dedication plaque and the floor mats.

Just fifty units of the 720S Le Mans are going to be built, and sixteen of them have been allocated to Europe. Prices in the UK start at £254,500.

McLaren dealers are accepting orders now, ahead of the first deliveries in September.
