Hyundai reveals the fourth-generation Tuscon

Nobody could accuse the all-new Tuscon of having bland styling. Hyundai’s latest ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language gives the compact SUV a distinctive look which was inspired by 2019’s Vision T concept.

At the front, the headlights and daytime running lights are integrated into a prominent ‘parametric jewel’ grille. When not illuminated, they’re almost hidden from view.

The theme continues along the vehicle’s sides, where striking geometric patterns and angular wheel arches dominate. A decorative chrome strip runs up the A pillars, then over the windows all the way to the rear, emphasising the silhouette. The effect is even more pronounced if a contrasting roof colour is specified.

Inside, the ‘glass cockpit’ dashboard features a configurable 10.25” instrument display behind the steering wheel, as well as a central 10.25” infotainment touchscreen. There are no physical buttons, so even the tri-zone climate control is operated via touch only, something that drivers may find both distracting and irritating.

Connectivity certainly isn’t lacking. In addition to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, the Tuscan boasts Bluelink telematics which offers services such as Connected Routing cloud-based navigation.

In terms of powertrains, customers are going to be faced with an almost bewildering assortment. First, they’ll need to decide whether they want a conventional petrol or diesel engine, a mild hybrid, a non-plug-in hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. Those options variously come with either an automatic or a manual gearbox, and either front- or all-wheel drive.

Initially, the most powerful is a 226 bhp (169 kW / 230 PS) non-plug-in hybrid that combines a 1.6 litre turbo-diesel engine, an electric motor, a tiny 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery and a six-speed automatic transmission. Later, a 261 bhp (194 kW / 265 PS) plug-in diesel hybrid is due to arrive.

Like its predecessor, the 2021 Tucson is being manufactured at Hyundai’s factory in the Czech Republic. The first deliveries are expected to take place towards the end of this year.
