The Suzuki Swift gets a mild facelift for 2021

A redesigned front grille and LED headlights identify the updated Suzuki Swift, which is now offered exclusively with a mild-hybrid powertrain.

Every non-Sport member of the range features a new 1.2 litre, four-cylinder K12D Dualjet petrol engine that develops 81 bhp (61 kW / 83 PS) plus 107 Nm (78 lb-ft) of peak torque.

The attached hybrid system is based around an Integrated Starter Generator. This compact belt-driven unit produces electricity via regenerative braking, storing it in a small 10 Ah lithium-ion battery. That self-charged energy is then used by the ISG to output an extra 3.0 bhp (2.3 kW / 3.1 PS) and 50 Nm (36 lb-ft) when required, to boost acceleration.

With a manual gearbox, the result is 57.2 mpg (4.9 l/100km) and 111 g/km of CO2 emissions on the WLTP combined cycle. For those who prefer an automatic, Suzuki has introduced a continuously-variable transmission as an option for selected versions.

One of the Swift’s unique selling points in the supermini segment continues to be the availability of all-wheel drive. The ‘ALLGRIP’ set-up – which has to be paired with the manual gearbox – employs a viscous coupling to send torque to the rear wheels if those at the front are losing traction. WLTP figures of 51.7 mpg (5.5 l/100km) and 123 g/km indicate that efficiency suffers, but not by much.

As well as the styling and technical changes, the trim grade structure and equipment levels have been refreshed too.

Standard kit on the entry SZ-L includes 16” alloy wheels, privacy glass, front electric windows, a rear-view camera, a 7” touchscreen and Smartphone Linkage Display Audio. Radar Brake Support and Adaptive Cruise Control are also fitted.

Moving up to the mid-specification SZ-T adds rear parking sensors and numerous driver aids (Lane Departure Warning, Weaving Alert, Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Dual Sensor Brake Support).

Keyless entry and start, climate control and satellite navigation all appear on the superior SZ5. Oddly, this is the only variant to benefit from electric rear windows and a telescopically-adjustable steering column.

UK on-the-road prices for the 2021 Suzuki Swift are:
  • SZ-L – £14,749
  • SZ-T – £16,249
  • SZ-T CVT – £17,249
  • SZ5 – £17,749
  • SZ5 CVT – £18,749
  • SZ5 ALLGRIP – £18,749
