Top 10: UK car sales Q3 2020
This year saw the worst September for new car registrations since the current bi-annual number plate system was introduced in 1999. Only 328,041 units were retailed, a reduction of 4.4 percent compared to the same month last year.
Cumulatively, the overall market is down by a third versus 2019, with the Fleet and Business sectors accounting for the majority of the shortfall. A bleak economic outlook for the fourth quarter means that a full recovery for the motor industry is unlikely to come soon.
Despite the turmoil, a shift towards electrified powertrains continues. Indeed, diesel’s share has fallen to just over 20 percent, while 15 percent of customers now opt for ‘alternative’ vehicles.
The most popular car in September was the Vauxhall Corsa (10,553 examples), followed by the Ford Fiesta (9,545) and, remarkably, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (8,085). However, the Fiesta remains at the top of the year-to-date league.
