Hyundai Kona Electric updated for 2021

Hyundai has given its Kona Electric a facelift and some specification enhancements, but the two powertrain options remain unchanged.

On the outside, this B-segment SUV gains restyled lights and bumpers, resulting in an overall length increase of 25 mm (1”). Unfortunately, the wheel arch claddings are now body-coloured, which fails to enhance the looks while being less practical.

Inside, there’s a choice of black or two-tone grey colour schemes, with cloth, part-leather or full-leather upholsteries available. A highlight for the 2021 model is the arrival of a 10.25” digital cluster that replaces traditional analogue instruments. It can be partnered by either an 8” or a 10.25” central infotainment touchscreen.

The Hyundai SmartSense suite of safety technologies has also been improved. Among the additional features are RSA (Rear Seat Alert – checks the rear doors are closed prior to departure), LVDA (Leading Vehicle Departure Alert – alerts the driver if they don’t react quickly enough after the vehicle ahead starts moving), BCA (Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist), RCCA (Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist) and SEW (Safe Exit Warning – alerts passengers leaving the vehicle about approaching traffic).

As before, customers are able to order either standard- or long-range variants.

The former has a 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS) electric motor, a single-speed transmission, and a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. With this combination, the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 9.9 seconds and the top speed is 96 mph (155 km/h). A full charge equates to a driving distance of 189 miles (305 kilometres), according to the WLTP measure.

Alternatively, the latter benefits from 201 bhp (150 kW / 204 PS) and a larger 64.0 kWh battery. Consequently, the 0-62 mph time falls to 7.9 seconds, top speed becomes 103 mph (167 km/h) and WLTP range rises to an impressive 300 miles (484 kilometres).
