Blower Continuation Series prototype revealed
Bentley Mulliner has finished assembling ‘Car Zero’, a prototype that heralds the upcoming hand-built Blower Continuation Series.
This project aims to faithfully recreate the 1929 4½ Litre ‘Blower’, which was devised by well-known racing driver Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin (with financial backing from aristocrat Dorothy Paget, and approval from fellow ‘Bentley Boy’ and by-then Bentley chairman Woolf Barnato).
‘Car Zero’ is the result of 40,000 hours of work. Featuring gloss black paintwork with a contrasting red Bridge of Weir leather interior, it consists of 1,846 individual components that had to be fabricated from scratch. A mixture of original drawings, period photographs and 3D laser scans were used to ensure their accuracy.
Several outside suppliers with knowledge of specialist techniques contributed to the endeavour. For example, NDR Limited assisted with the four-cylinder engine and Amherst Villiers supercharger, Israel Newton and Sons Limited was responsible for the hot-riveted heavy-gauge steel chassis, Lomax Coachbuilders constructed the bodywork’s ash frame, and Jones Springs Limited made suspension parts.
Bentley Mulliner will now subject ‘Car Zero’ to a thorough durability testing programme. Afterwards, twelve production examples are going to be manufactured. All of them have already been allocated to customers.
