The new Vivaro-e Hydrogen uses a fuel cell

Vauxhall and Opel have unveiled the Vivaro-e Hydrogen van, which uses hydrogen plus a fuel cell to generate energy. This new model will be sold alongside the existing battery-electric Vivaro-e.

In fact, the Vivaro-e Hydrogen is essentially a modified version of the Vivaro-e.

Three 700-bar carbon-fibre hydrogen tanks are fitted instead of an under-floor battery pack. They can be filled in just three minutes, and their capacity is large enough to achieve a WLTP driving range of 249 miles (400 kilometres). However, in the UK at least, finding a hydrogen refuelling station is likely to be a serious challenge.

In addition, the Vivaro-e Hydrogen features a small 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that’s located beneath the front seats. As well as enabling regenerative braking, its role is to provide an extra acceleration boost when needed. External recharging is possible thanks to a plug-in facility.

The 45 kW fuel cell and traction motor are housed within the engine bay. Consequently, cargo space is unaffected and maximum payload actually increases to 1,100 kg (2,425 lb).

Final assembly of the Vivaro-e Hydrogen is going to take place at the Opel Special Vehicles facility in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

Deliveries to fleet customers in left-hand-drive markets are due to begin towards the end of this year. Right-hand drive availability won’t happen until early 2023, though.

Prices have yet to be announced.
