Volkswagen’s new Golf R Estate offers a tempting combination of high performance and practicality.

Like every other Golf Estate, its wheelbase is 66 mm (2.6”) longer than the hatchback’s. Consequently, back-seat passengers get increased legroom, while a luggage capacity of 1,642 litres is possible if the rear bench is folded down. Furthermore, the Golf R Estate can now be fitted with a tow bar – the maximum allowable braked trailer weight is 1.9 tonnes (4,188 pounds).

The powertrain is carried over unchanged from the regular Golf R. This comprises a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 4Motion all-wheel drive, and R Performance Torque Vectoring on the rear axle.

Thanks to 320 PS (315 bhp / 235 kW) plus 420 Nm (309 lb-ft) of peak torque, the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes just 4.9 seconds. Ordinarily, the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). However, that figure is raised to 168 mph (270 km/h) with the optional R Performance pack, which also includes a 19” wheel upgrade and two additional driving modes.
