A Mustang Mach-E pays tribute to the WASP

Ford has created a customised 2021 Mustang Mach-E that commemorates the Women Airforce Service Pilots, an organisation which was founded in August 1943 upon the merger of the Women's Flying Training Detachment and the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron.

The WASP recruited civilian female pilots to undertake various duties. Ferrying combat aeroplanes of virtually every type to United States Army Air Forces bases across the globe was its primary mission, but WASP aviators were also involved in target towing and general cargo flights.

Disbandment came in December 1944. However, WASP personnel had to wait until 1977 for the US government to grant them military veteran status.

A unique livery on the Mustang Mach-E incorporates the WASP ‘wings’ badge and the number 38. The latter recalls how many WASP pilots lost their lives either during training or on active duty.

Ford is going to auction this special vehicle at the 2021 AirVenture show currently taking place in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The proceeds will then be used to help fund the Experimental Aircraft Association’s education initiatives.
