The 2022 Citan becomes a compact camper van
Mercedes-Benz and VanEssa mobilcamping have worked together to create a prototype camper van based on the new 2022 Citan Tourer.
The conversion involves two removable furniture modules, making the Citan Tourer a true multi-purpose vehicle.
Opening the tailgate reveals the kitchenette unit. Weighing around 60 kg (132 lb), it houses a single gas burner, a sink and a 31-litre compressor fridge, all in their own pull-out drawers. There’s also a 13-litre water tank, plus space to store food and crockery.
At night, the sleeping system comes to the fore. This is essentially a double bed measuring 1.89 x 1.15 metres (6’ 2” x 3’ 9”). When not in use, the three mattress sections are stacked on top of the kitchenette.
A potential downside is the lack of luggage capacity, especially if rear-seat passengers are being carried. Curtains or window covers are an obvious omission, too.
The Citan Tourer camper will be on display at the 2021 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, which opens to the public tomorrow.
