In June 2020, Ford and Volkswagen agreed to work together to produce a new range of commercial vehicles. The first model to result from that alliance – a compact van – has already been launched.

It was originally introduced last year as the fifth-generation Volkswagen Caddy. Now the Ford version is here, initially in people-carrying Tourneo Connect guise.

When dealers begin accepting orders in early 2022, customers will have a choice of L1 or longer L2 wheelbases. Both feature twin side sliding doors and seven-seat interiors. For enhanced versatility, the second and third rows can be folded, tumbled or removed entirely.

Four trim grades are being offered. The entry-level Trend comes with steel wheels, an 8.25” infotainment touchscreen, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking.

Moving up to the Titanium adds 16” alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, exterior satin chrome, and an upgraded 10” touchscreen.

The distinctive Active has an SUV-inspired look, thanks to a front skid plate and protective mouldings on the bumpers, arches and sills. Two-tone 17” alloy wheels and a honeycomb grille are fitted, too.

Completing the quartet is the Sport. As well as 17” dark-finish alloy wheels, bonnet stripes, a modified front bumper and adaptive front lighting, its specification includes a fully-digital, four-mode 10.25” instrument display.

The engine line-up comprises:
  • 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol – 114 PS (112 bhp / 84 kW) plus 220 Nm (162 lb-ft)
  • 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel – 102 PS (100 bhp / 75 kW) plus 280 Nm (206 lb-ft)
  • 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel – 122 PS (120 bhp / 90 kW) plus 320 Nm (236 lb-ft)

Although all are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, a PowerShift seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional for the petrol and 122 PS diesel units. Furthermore, semi-autonomous driving is possible when the latter transmission is combined with Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centring.

If extra traction is required, then all-wheel drive is also available (but only in conjunction with the most powerful diesel and a manual gearbox).
