Audi Black Editions

With its new A6 Saloon, A6 Avant and A7 Sportback Black Edition models, Audi has joined the myriad manufacturers that have resorted to using the ‘Black’ tag.

The suffix has previously appeared on a broad spectrum of cars, from the humble Toyota Aygo Black and Vauxhall Corsa Black Edition to more exclusive offerings such as the Porsche Boxster S Black Edition and Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series. So, Audi’s marketing team hasn’t exactly been original when coming up with a name for these new versions.

Nevertheless, the interiors certainly live up to expectations as they feature black leather sports seats, a black headlining and piano black trim pieces. The A6 variants additionally come with a DAB radio, Bose surround system and an iPod connection.

On the outside, the most striking things are the five-spoke alloy wheels (20” on the A6 and 21” on the A7), which have had their visual impact amplified by the standard-fit lowered suspension. The new rims undoubtedly look good, but don’t expect the combination of a stiffer chassis and ultra-low profile tyres to deliver an especially comfortable ride.

Less successful is the black finish for the window frames, front grille and number plate surrounds. Perhaps the effect works better with other paint colours, but against the Garnet Red finish of the A6 used for the images it just appears as if some trim is missing.

In the UK, on-the-road prices range from £35,010 to £56,785. The A6 Black Edition is available with all engine and transmission combinations, with the exception of the S6. Similarly, the A7 Black Edition can be ordered with any of the existing drivetrain options apart from the front-wheel drive 3.0 litre diesel and S7.
