The first Mercedes-Benz T-Class is here

Mercedes-Benz is targetting families and leisure enthusiasts with its T-Class. This all-new model is a posher passenger-carrying version of the latest Citan cargo van, which in turn is derived from the current Renault Kangoo.

Initially, a five-seat variant measuring 4,498 mm (177.1”) long will be offered, but a longer seven-seat T-Class is due to arrive at a later date.

Access to the back seats is via a pair of practical sliding side doors, while either a tailgate or twin doors can be configured for the rear luggage compartment. A chrome front grille and an absence of unpainted black plastic components partially disguise the commercial vehicle origins.

The specification list is similarly car-like. Fitted as standard are carpets, air conditioning, keyless start, a 5.5” instrument cluster display, Bluetooth, and a 7” touchscreen for the intuitive MBUX infotainment system that’s compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Customers are going to have a choice of four four-cylinder engines:

T 160 – 1,332 cc petrol, 102 PS (100 bhp / 75 kW) with 200 Nm (147 lb-ft)
T 180 – 1,332 cc petrol, 131 PS (128 bhp / 96 kW) with 240 Nm (177 lb-ft)
T 160 d – 1,461 cc diesel, 95 PS (93 bhp / 70 kW) with 260 Nm (191 lb-ft)
T 180 d – 1,461 cc diesel, 116 PS (114 bhp / 85 kW) with 270 Nm (199 lb-ft)

They’re ordinarily mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, however a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is an alternative transmission for the 131 PS petrol unit and the two diesels.

Of course, some prospective purchasers might not be at all interested in internal combustion. For them, the EQT – a future battery-electric T-Class – should have more appeal.
