Cosworth GT86 / BRZ / FR-S Power Packages

In the absence of any factory performance upgrades for the Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S triplets, Cosworth has launched a range of aftermarket Power Packages.

The first of these is the Stage 1 Power Package which is available now. However, things are slightly complicated because it actually encompasses three ‘sub stages’.

As standard the FA20 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, normally aspirated boxer engine produces 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS). Stage 1.1 lifts that figure to 220 bhp (164 kW / 223 PS) courtesy of a stainless steel free-flow sports exhaust, a replacement air filter, a low temperature thermostat and a calibration kit for the ECU.

Also included are an engine plaque and enamel body badges, but the modifications aren’t cheap. According to two Cosworth dealers (Bedfordshire-based Amber Performance and Fensport Performance of Cambridgeshire) Stage 1.1 costs £2,400 including VAT. So that’s almost £105 per horsepower gained, then.

Stage 1.2 adds a combined overpipe and front pipe to the exhaust which takes the motor’s output up to 225 bhp (167 kW / 228 PS). The price becomes £3,238.80 though, or just over £115 per extra horsepower.

Furthermore, Stage 1.3 comes with a thermally coated 4-2-1 manifold that helps to reduce under-bonnet temperatures while being 22% lighter than the stock item. The result is 230 bhp (171 kW / 233 PS) for an outlay of £4,558.80, which equates to £138 for each additional horsepower.

If the improvements offered by Stage 1 aren’t sufficient, the Stage 2 and Stage 3 Power Packages are due this summer. These are expected to see up to 325 bhp (242 kW / 330 PS) for road use and 380 bhp (283 kW / 385 PS) for competition cars.

Cosworth is saying its Power Packages are “suitable for warranty by vehicle manufacturers” and they provide “completely validated solutions”. In reality the situation re warranty cover is still a little unclear, though.
