2016 World Car Awards winners

Given the mediocrity of the other two finalists, it's hardly surprising that the Mazda MX-5 has been named 2016 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.

A jury of 73 international motoring journalists particularly praised the roadster's driving dynamics and weight reduction. They obviously liked the styling too, because the fourth-generation MX-5 also won the World Car Design of the Year title.

Unexpectedly, the BMW 7 Series took the World Luxury Car of the Year prize, beating the much-fancied Volvo XC90. In the World Performance Car of the Year category, Audi's R8 Coupé was deservedly triumphant.

Finally, the World Green Car of the Year accolade went to the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai – another worthy victor.
