UK prices for the 2021 Kia Sorento

Kia has announced prices for its new fourth-generation Sorento, which is now on sale.

Customers have a choice of ‘2’, ‘3’ or ‘4’ trim grades. All come with all-wheel drive, seven seats (the front two being heated), LED headlights and rear light clusters, automatic lights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and dual-zone air conditioning.

A ‘glass cockpit’ dashboard features a 12.3” digital instrument cluster plus a central 8” touchscreen. The latter is used by an infotainment system that’s compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Furthermore, various assistance technologies are standard across the range. They include Smart Cruise Control, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Trailer Stability Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist and Multi-Collision Brake Assist.

The Sorento ‘3’ adds self-levelling rear suspension, privacy glass, a powered tailgate and an upgrade from 17” to 19” alloy wheels.

Inside, this mid-level variant gains black leather upholstery, power adjustment for the front seats, Highway Driving Assist, a larger 10.25” touchscreen, wireless device charging and UVO Connect telematics.

Completing the line-up is the Sorento ‘4’. As well as a panoramic sunroof, it boasts Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, Bose audio and a head-up display. Blind-Spot View Monitor, Blind-spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist and a 360° Around View Monitor are among the extra safety devices.

Every version is available with a self-charging (i.e. non-plug-in) hybrid powertrain. Combining a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine, a 44.2 kW electric motor, a small 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery and a six-speed automatic gearbox, total output is rated at 226 bhp (169 kW / 230 PS) with 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

Consequently, the Sorento HEV is able to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 8.7 seconds, before eventually reaching a top speed of 119 mph (191 km/h). Combined cycle efficiency up to 40.9 mpg (6.9 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 158 g/km are fairly respectable, too.

Alternatively, the Sorento ‘3’ can be ordered with a 2.2 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. While 199 bhp (148 kW / 202 PS) and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) result in a marginally slower 0-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds, 42.2 mpg (6.7 l/100km) suggests slightly better fuel economy. Perhaps surprisingly, the CO2 figure is noticeably worse at 176 g/km.

If neither of those options appeal, then Kia has already confirmed that a petrol plug-in hybrid will arrive later this year.
