Toyota launches the 2022 Hilux GR Sport

With four examples of the GR DKR Hilux T1+ currently competing in the 2022 Dakar Rally, now is the perfect time for Toyota to announce its new road-going Hilux GR Sport.

Offered exclusively in Double Cab guise, the GR Sport pick-up gains 17” two-tone alloy wheels, all-terrain tyres, enlarged front fog light surrounds, and a unique front grille. In addition, a black finish is applied to various components such as the door mirror caps, side steps and tailgate handle.

The interior features front sports seats, seat heating for both rows, and black leather upholstery with faux suede inserts. Some colour is provided by red stitching, a red trim strip across the dashboard, and blue illumination on the door panels.

To go with the cosmetic changes, the GR Sport benefits from an upgraded suspension set-up. The usual dampers are replaced by faster-responding monotube items, plus the front coil springs are stiffer. According to Toyota, the ride, handling and body control are all improved as a result.

The sole available engine is an unmodified 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel unit, which sends 204 PS (201 bhp / 150 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of peak torque to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

An automatic limited-slip differential and active traction control are both fitted to help make the most of that output. Performance is actually quite respectable for this type of vehicle, as the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) takes 10.7 seconds and a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h) can be achieved.
