New Honda CB500 family

The new Honda CB500X, CB500F and CBR500R could prove to be popular first big bikes, as they have all been designed to comply with European A2 licence requirements.

And it’s a market that looks set to grow because, from the 19th of January 2013, a change to the rules means that anybody aged between 19 and 23 will be restricted to using an A2-compliant machine for their practical motorcycle test.

Under the A2 regulations, engines must be at least 395 cc and produce between 33 bhp (25 kW / 34 PS) and 47 bhp (35 kW / 48 PS). So, perhaps unsurprisingly, Honda has given its CB500 trio a new 471 cc parallel twin-cylinder motor that develops exactly 47 bhp.

Even though all three bikes share the same tubular steel frame and various other components - including a standard fit anti-lock braking system - styling differences should help to give each of them a unique character.

The CB500F is the naked version, while a more sporty flavour is provided by the fully-faired CB500R. Then there’s the CB500X, which features a larger fuel tank, longer travel suspension and a slightly stretched wheelbase in line with its adventure bike role.

Prices for the 2013 Honda CB500 range have yet to be confirmed, but expect them to start from around £5,000.
