2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep has refreshed the Grand Cherokee for 2014, giving its SUV a new look and an updated range of engines.
The styling tweaks are most obvious at the front, which now features a shorter grille, thinner headlights and LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the tailgate has been redesigned, the spoiler is slightly larger and LED light units have been fitted.
But the most important change is beneath the surface: the Grand Cherokee is finally going to be offered in North America with diesel power.
Rated at 237 bhp (179 kW / 243 PS) with 569 Nm (420 lb/ft) of torque, the 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6 is essentially the same engine that has been available in Europe for ages. Highway fuel economy is 30 mpg US (36.0 mpg UK / 7.8 l/100km) for 4x2 models, which actually doesn’t seem much better than the 25 mpg US (30.0 mpg / 9.4 l/100km) achieved by the 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 petrol version.
As with all 2014 powertrains, the diesel motor comes connected to a new eight-speed automatic transmission that promises greater fuel efficiency, smoother changes and swifter acceleration. Its arrival coincides with the introduction of an ‘EcoMode’ which optimises gear shifts, lowers the air suspension’s ride height and, on V8-powered models, triggers the cylinder deactivation facility.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in a choice of Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit and SRT trim grades. Prices have yet to be confirmed.
